They Fired the School Bus Driver at the Pep Rally — Then a 1994 Yearbook Page Walked Onto the Gym Floor

Dwight Corley took the pep-rally microphone mid-fight-song and told two thousand students that Loretta Baines stole $1,200 from the fuel fund.

Then he walked down to the gym door, reached for the county bus keys on her belt loop, and pulled them off in front of her grandchild's class.

Loretta has driven Route 12 for twenty-six years — her grandfather drove it before her, her father after him. She was standing at the door with a black binder against her chest when he called her name over the PA.

She didn't cry. She didn't argue. She opened the binder.

"I keep a mileage log," she said, into the dead air where the fight song had been. "Every stop, every top-off, every odometer reading for the fuel week you're talking about. Point to the missing week in my handwriting."
